History of Film
This course is a survey of significant moments in American and International film history through the twentieth century. Films will include The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Modern Times, Casablanca, Rome, Open City, Dance, Girl, Dance, A bout de souffle, Star Wars, and Do the Right Thing, among others. Over the course of the semester, we will discuss technological developments, aesthetic and formal innovations, and major film movements. Our coverage is meant to be an overview of the most significant developments and movements, and, as such, should prepare you for more in-depth study of the areas that pique your interest. For your final paper and presentation, you will make a case for why a film of your choosing is important to film history.
