In English 4740 we will consider poetry writing as a means for self-expression, but we will occupy ourselves primarily with writing as a “craft,” with how good poetry works. The focus on techniques will acquaint you with the elements of poetry and help you to build writer’s muscle. You will write five original poems during the semester. We will spend part of the term trying out a traditional form (maybe a sonnet), then explore the implications of choosing “free” verse as a form for a poem. Grappling with traditional form and cultivating an enriched understanding of “free” verse should make you a more sensitive reader of poetry in other literature courses.
