Survey of American Literature II

American Literature II picks up with Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson. The course begins with them because so much that happens in American literature afterward is best understood with this great scruffy poet and this seemingly demure one in the background. We will then move quickly toward Modernism, puzzling out along the way what brings literature to that point of even more radical experimentation and change.
